Rambutan, with its thick red skin and pliable spiky hair, looks like alien food.
Taste: Sweet, slightly acidic and super juicy. Comparable to a grape, but the flesh clings to a single seed. They are similar to lychee and longan.
How to eat: About midway, press a knife through the skin and around the fruit. Remove the top and hold the bottom as you take a bite.
Selecting: Choose bright red fruit with no hint of green. The riper the fruit, the sweeter it is and the easier it separates from the seed.
Storing: Refrigerate up to 12 days.
Season: Peaks at Christmas.
